Oldham PS Members Win the Annual L&CPU Novice Cup

The Lancashire and Cheshire Photographic Union held an “Interim Novice Cup” this year, with different rules, so that the event could be judged and watched remotely using Zoom conferencing software. Usually it is a print competition, with eight prints from eight members, entered by the individual clubs, the entry being chosen by the club competition secretary. However, this year it was run more on the lines of the Individual Competition, where individual club members could enter themselves via the L&CPU Portal, each entering up to 4 “open” category images and 4 “nature” images (which were entered under PAGB nature rules). Of course, prints were not possible this year because we couldn’t have the event in a hall, so the images used were PDIs (Projected Digital Images, that were judged on a monitor screen this time).

The entrants had to be individual club members who do not hold any photographic distinctions and who have not previously won any awards in major competitions (outside their own club).

Three judges marked each image between 2 and 5, giving each a score out of 15 and the cumulative scores in each section gave us the individual winners of the sections.

The club scores in each section are calculated by adding the top six scoring images from six different photographers entered in that section. Because we had six entrants, that means that every one of them contributed to our winning club scores in each section.

The sum of the 2 section scores gave the overall winning club, which was again the Oldham Photographic Society! The judges also made awards for their favourite works.
